Allergy Testing Q & A

What is allergy testing?

Allergy testing is a minimally invasive diagnostic procedure used to identify substances in your environment that trigger allergy symptoms.

Allergies are an overreaction of your immune system to substances not generally considered harmful to health. This overreaction causes a wide range of symptoms that affect your health. For some, these symptoms may be seasonal.

You might also experience persistent allergy symptoms depending on which substances cause an allergic reaction. Common allergens include:

  • Mold
  • Dust
  • Pollen
  • Pet dander
  • Insect venom

Allergy testing can identify your allergy triggers so you can treat your condition more efficiently and avoid allergens in your environment.

When should I consider allergy testing?

You should schedule allergy testing at Prestige Primary Care if you have persistent allergy symptoms that you can’t manage with over-the-counter medications and lifestyle changes. These symptoms include:

  • Sneezing
  • Runny nose
  • Chronic cough
  • Nasal congestion
  • Sinus headaches
  • Watery, itchy eyes
  • Skin rashes and eczema

You can also experience anaphylaxis, a potentially life-threatening allergic reaction that causes sudden airway inflammation. The inflammation makes breathing difficult and requires immediate medical care to prevent further complications.

Dr. Aziz can confirm your symptoms are triggered by allergies and not another condition through in-office allergy testing.

What happens during allergy testing?

There are two types of allergy tests available at Prestige Primary Care, P.A.:

Skin allergy testing

Skin allergy tests involve pricking your skin with a small amount of known allergens. If a red, itchy welt develops on your skin, it’s an indication of an allergy.

Blood allergy testing

Blood allergy tests detect certain antibodies your body produces during an allergic reaction. Blood test results take longer to get than skin testing but can provide valuable information Dr. Aziz uses to manage your allergies.

Throughout your test, Dr. Aziz monitors your health and can address any allergic reactions you experience. He also customizes a care plan to treat existing allergy symptoms and prevent new ones.

You may need to take medications or immunotherapy to keep allergies under control. Dr. Aziz can also recommend strategies that help you avoid known allergy triggers. If you have anaphylaxis, you need to carry an epinephrine pen with you. The pen contains a medication to quickly relieve airway inflammation so you can breathe.
